Visiting the SouthWest (I): Winchester and Salisbury

Querida Big Family,

Cuando llegamos a Inglaterra y pese a que habíamos tratado de seleccionar lo mejor posible el sitio donde vivir, no estábamos absolutamente seguros de cómo iba a ser la zona.

Después de este tiempo estamos convencidos de que vivir en Camberley y en el barrio que vivimos ha sido un auténtico acierto.

Cuando visitamos Londres algunos fines de semana,  nos damos cuenta de que pese a ser una capital fascinante, no es muy interesante para vivir con niños. Todo lo contrario que Camberley y otros pueblos/ciudades del condado de Surrey, Hampshire y Berkshire. (Camberley aunque pertenece a Surrey linda con estos otros dos Condados). Vivir aquí nos permite, por comunicación y distancia, trabajar en Londres y en todo el SouthWest (donde se establecen un montón de empresas especialmente los operadores y las tecnológicas) pero también disfrutar de un entorno “family friendly” total.

El caso es que lo que yo os quería contar hoy, es, que además de ser un pueblo mono, tranquilo con un montón de servicios, colegios, y trabajo cerca, tenemos a buena distancia lugares muy especiales que no os podéis perder si venís a visitarnos. Como son varios sitios, si os parece os lo cuento en varios post.  En el de hoy, para abrir boca: Winchester y Salisbury.

A 35 minutos de casa tenemos Winchester. Su principal atractivo es una maravillosa catedral que empezó a construirse en el S.XI. Es un ejemplo de gótico perpendicular, una de las etapas de la arquitectura gótica inglesa. Preciosa, un coro increíble y con rincones fascinantes. Habitualmente hay conciertos dignos de asistir por la acústica y lo evocador del espacio. El hecho de que Felipe II se casara allí con María Tudor, a los españoles también nos resulta un atractivo. La entrada vale 7 libras pero se puede usar durante un año y no es nominal. Además de la catedral, la calle principal me rechifla. Siempre hay mercado pero ahora en Navidad, en el claustro de la misma catedral, despliegan uno de los más famosos de Inglaterra además de una pista de hielo.

Otro de los atractivos de Winchester es la Gran Sala. Es del siglo XII y conocida porque en sus paredes estuvo “supuestamente” colgada la mesa redonda del Rey Arturo. Actualmente hay una mesa colgada que data del siglo XIV, por lo que no es contemporánea del rey. A pesar de eso no está mal ir allí e imaginarse al Rey y a los caballeros. Además tienen disfraces de época que los niños se pueden poner y disfrutar un rato imaginando. La entrada es libre aunque piden una donación de 3 libras por familia.

A una hora y diez minutos de casa aproximadamente, está Salisbury donde se encuentra una de las catedrales más bonitas de Inglaterra. Es del s.XIII y solo tardaron 38 años en construirla lo que es un auténtico record para la época. Tiene 123 metros de altura y un claustro maravilloso. Además el enclave donde se ubica es muy bonito, muy al uso inglés que tanto nos sorprende a los españoles de rodearlo todo de “lawns”.

La catedral acoge uno de los documentos más importantes de la civilización moderna: La carta Magna, un documento escrito en latín sobre una piel de vaca. De los 40 ejemplares originales solo quedan 4 y el que está allí es el mejor conservado. Los nobles la escribieron porque estaban cansados de pagar tantos impuestos a la corona para financiar la guerra. En esta carta se inspiraron, por ejemplo, las constituciones de Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, la declaración de los derechos humanos de las naciones unidas. Declaraban su existencia como personas y su libertad frente a los poderosos. Para entrar, no recuerdo exactamente la donación que nos pidieron pero creo que está alrededor de las 7 libras como la entrada de Winchester, pero en este caso no se puede usar más veces.

El resto de la ciudad es también preciosa. La cruza el río, tiene algo de muralla y una calle principal también mona.

When we arrived in the UK, although we had done an extensive  study of different areas,  we were not sure about our choice of area for living.

After all this time we are absolutely sure that living in Camberley and specifically in our neighborhood is the best choice.

Sometimes, when we go to London on weekends, we notice it is an amazing city but it is not family friendly at all. However, Camberley and other towns in Surrey, Hampshire or Berkhire are fantastic for families. (Camberley is on the border of this three counties although it  belongs to Surrey). Living here you can work in London and the SouthWest, where there are  a lot of technological companies and on the other hand you have calm, parks, lovely schools, and a lot of services.

Anyway, what I wanted to tell you today is that Camberley is a lovely place and in addition is a reasonable distance from amazing places you can not miss if you come to visit us. As there a lot of places I will tell you in different posts. To start today: Winchester and Salisbury.

35 minutes from Camberley you can find Winchester. The main attraction there is a great cathedral dated from XI century. It is an example of perpendicular Gothic, one of the British gothic style.  It is amazing. It has an incredible choir and some fascinating corners.

A lot of Concerts areheld  there. Worth listening to one of them due the wonderful acoustics of the place. Spaniards enjoy discovering Felipe II was married to Maria Tudor there. The ticket is 7 pounds but you can use it all the following year any times that you want and it can be use by different perople. I love Winchester High Street as well.  In addition, if you go at Christmas, you will find one of the most famous markets in Britain in the Cathedral and an ice rink too.

Another attraction in Winchester is the Great Hall. It was built in the XII century and it is well known because it is thought the round table of  King Arthur was hung on its walls. Nowadays there is a table hung but is dated from XIV century so It is known that it is not contemporary to the King. In spite of this I like going there and imagining the King and the Lords with their big swords. There are some medieval costumes to try for free. The kids enjoy them a lot. The ticket is free so they ask for a donation of 3 pounds per family. 

Nearly an hour and ten minutes to my home is Salisbury where you can find one of the most beautiful cathedrals of England. It is dated from XIII Century and it was built in just 38 years. It is an incredible record of this period of  history. The tower is 123 meters high and  wonderful cloister. In addition I love the place where the cathedral is situated. It is “very  Bristish”, in the middle of lawns. Spaniards always comment it when they arrive there.

Inside the cathedral is one of the most important documents of modern civilization: The Magna Carta. It is written in Latin on a cow skin. 40 copies were written but only four of them have survived until our days. The best preserved of this four is in Salisbury Cathedral. The lords wrote it because they were tired of paying so many taxes to the King to fund the War. The constitutions of the nited State, Britain or declaration of human rights are inspired by it. In the text of the Magna Carta Lords ask for their freedom and rights in front of the powerful people. I do not remember exactly what he donation is for the ticket but it is around 7 pounds like Winchester. In this case you can not use the ticket any more times.

The town of Salisbury is beutiful as well. It is crossed by the river, pieces of wall are preserved, and High Street is very nice.
